Paleo Schmaleo

Well, this past week I intended to try out the Paleo diet. Needless to say, I could not continue through the whole week sticking to a strict Paleo diet. Don't get me wrong, I love salads and can eat a salad every single day. What I found to be difficult was not eating whole grains and legumes. As I've said previously, I am vegetarian. Avoiding those things that provide protein in my diet was quite challenging. I gave it the good 'ole college try but I need to have my whole grains and beans. So what can I say....the Paleo lifestyle is not for everyone. Though I could not see myself becoming completely Paleo I can see adapting some aspects of this lifestyle into my everyday life. Have you tried the Paleo diet? If so, please tell me how things went for you.

  1. How long have you been a vegetarian? I am going "clean" and eating just whole foods or plant based, and have mostly stopped eating meat. I do love grains! It would be hard to stop eating them! Anyway, I went with out meat for a little over a week, then had a small piece of chicken breast. My stomach was so upset! Makes me not want to eat meat again! Is this normal?

    Enjoyed your post!

    1. Hi Ann,
Yes, I believe that reaction is normal. I had the same reaction when I first started eating vegetarian. I became extremely ill and like you, felt like that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I refused to go back to eating any type of meat whatsoever. It was the absolute best decision I made. I too love grains and being vegetarian, I eat beans at least 3 times a week. The writing was on the wall but I wanted to give it a go anyway. At least now I know for sure the Paleo lifestyle is not for me!

  2. Yes, I would definitely say that those are two completely incompatible diet plans. You cannot do without any protein entirely. That's not just you, that is every human being. If you were going to try to overlap diet plans again, I would probably speak with your doctor first.

    1. Hi Amy,
I actually did speak with my doctor about trying the Paleo diet and it was my doctor who recommended that I remove one aspect at a time so that there would not be a total shock to my system. Of course, my doctor was very vocal about removing those things that provide protein in a vegetarian lifestyle. At the same time, she was aware that I was trying it out for a week to see how I liked it so there was no fear of me becoming deficient in protein, at least not after a week's time. I could take the opinions of others about eating Paleo, but what's the fun in that? I'm glad I did because I now know without a doubt that it is not for me.

    1. I completely understand where you come from Liam. The things I do most are for research purposes and when I build a clientele I want to be able to point out both good and bad things about something they might have a question about. Since meat is a huge part of Paleo dieting, I knew upfront that it was not really tailored for a vegetarian, but at the same time I wanted to give the other aspects of it a try. Needless to say, I cannot live without grains and legumes so now I have my own research to back up why I would not recommend this diet to others.
